Popular mobile wallet app, Alipay, has launched an effortless new way to process your payments. It is a “smile-to-pay” system which is now on trial at a KFC location in Hangzhou, China.

Processing payments effortlessly and accurately is an objective of many new age digital payment companies. Ant Financial, a subsidiary of Alibaba, has launched a new way to make your payments and it is a smile-to-pay system, powered by a mix of facial recognition technologies and special security algorithms.

In the video below, detailing how the payment process works, one young woman uses the machine in a variety of different appearances:


The system requires about one to two seconds of facial scanning with a 3D camera and a “live-ness detection algorithm” to check the identity of the person paying, who must also enter their mobile phone number to help guard against fraud.
