Scientists from Switzerland have developed an impressive concrete roofing that can be used to harvest solar power.

A Switzerland-based team has successfully designed and built a concrete roofing structure capable of producing solar energy. The roof is designed with a unique butterfly appearance and is constructed in several layers. Heating, cooling coils and the insulation are installed over the inner concrete layer. A second layer, encloses the roof, onto which thin-film photo-voltaic cells are installed.

The ultra-thin, curved concrete roof makes use of innovative digital design and fabrication methods.

The design will allow a typical residential building to become energy self-sufficient as it generates more energy than it consumes. The system is expected to be put to use in a construction project for the first time next year.
